In the noughties the DVLA had seen the error of their ways and moved into the allocation and sale of ‘cherished’ numbers. One was purchased for £250 to read P77UL G. It is still retained although no longer on a vehicle but rather on a retention certificate. It remains for sale for £600.

Born 1881 and joining the Navy in 1897 - Serving under Jellicoe in WW1 and author of the book The Blocking of Zeebrugge – Previously seeing action during the Boxer Rebellion [1896-1900] and later serving as navigation officer on the Emperor of India – He achieved the rank of Vice Admiral on retirement in 1929 and taking on duties in his home county of Gloucestershire as a JP and Commanding the Home Guard throughout WW11 - In 1945 he went to the Admiralty as Director of Shipping - He died in 1955 at the age of 74. The VC was awarded by ballot - Rule 13 – April 1918 – Gazetted 23 July 1918 - when he was Captain of the Vindictive which drew fire from batteries and heavy machine guns alongside the MOLE in darkness, whilst supervising the landings at Zeebrugge, so the donor barges could be scuttled to complete the blockade, thus preventing the u-boats from leaving the port – He also held a RHS Silver Medal for saving a seaman from drowning [as did his Father]

Was born on 8th March 1890. He was educated at Grantown-on-Spey School and at Edinburgh University, qualifying with a Bachelor of Medicine & a Batchelor of Surgery in 1913. He served during WW1 from 1914-1918 with the Royal Army Medical Corps as Medical Officer to the 11th Royal Fusiliers, being Mentioned in Despatches and wounded, loosing his left arm in 1916, he was promoted to Captain in 1916, and Major in 1918. He was a Specialist Hygiene Officer from 1917-20, being awarded the M.B.E. in 1918. He left the Army and joined the Royal Air Force Medical Services in a Permanent Commission as a Squadron Leader on 26th March 1920. The same date he became Assistant Director Medical Services (Hygiene) Directorate of RAF Medical Services at the Air Ministry, working in the Department of the Chief of the Air Staff (later renamed the Department of the Air Member for Personnel), he worked in this post from 1920-24. From 1924-27 he was the Deputy Principal Medical Officer, at the Medical Branch of the Royal Air Force India, at the Headquarters, Kelvin Grove, Simla. He was the Senior Medical Officer R.A.F. Depot in 1927. He was the Principal Medical Officer Air Defence Group in 1929, as well as working at the R.A.F. Officer’s Hospital Uxbridge having being promoted to Wing Commander on 1st January 1929, and was a Staff Officer at the Air Ministry in 1930. On 29th August 1931 he was with the Medical Branch of No.1 Air Defence Group at Tavistock Place, London. On 31st August 1932 he was at the Directorate of R.A.F. Medical Services at the Department of the Air Member for Personnel at the Air Ministry. In 1934 he became Principal Medical Officer R.A.F., in India, based at the Aircraft Park, Lahore Cantonment, being promoted to Group Captain on 1st January 1935. From 1937-42 he became D.G.M.S. working at the Medical Branch RAF Depot No.24 (Training) Group, R.A.F. Uxbridge, and again worked at the Air Ministry for a period. By the end of 1942 he had been twice Mentioned in Despatches, and was promoted to Air Vice Marshal in that year. From 1942-44 he was Principal Medical Officer of Bomber Command, and from 1944-46 of South East Asia Command, being promoted to Air Marshal in 1946, in the same year as being made Director General of R.A.F. Medical Services, the highest post for his profession in the R.A.F., he retired from this rank in 1948. He had also been Honorary Surgeon to H.M. King George VI from 1942-48. He was appointed K.B.E. in 1946 (L/G.: 13/6/1946), C.B. (Military Division) in 1945 (L/G.: 1/1/1945), and Knight of Grace of the Venerable Order of Saint John of Jerusalem in 1947 (L/G.: 3/1/1947).
